Despite the giant puffy coat, Harlow Mead felt small and fragile in my arms. She was terrified. The critter in the woods had startled her, made her jump into my embrace, but the fear in her eyes was bigger, more insurmountable than that. We were dealing with a faceless threat with no apparent way out. It scared me too.

Yet, she was here, in the woods in the middle of the night, trying to find some way out of it. She was damn brave and determined, and I couldn’t help but admire that. It wasn’t until something else replaced the fear in her gaze, something softer and more intimate, that I realized just how much I admired her. Most people went their whole lives without having to handle the kind of pressure she faced. She was fucking amazing. And she fit into my arms so perfectly, and her lips . . .

She’s a student!

I didn’t examine too closely how hard I had to focus to drop my arms to my sides, take a step back. I just forced my gaze to the darkness beyond the path and cleared my throat.

This was just bonding due to shared trauma. We had no one else to lean on in this situation. Lines had become blurred because of factors out of my control, but it was up to me to make sure boundaries remained intact.

“So . . .” My voice came out strained, and I had to clear my throat again, force myself to square my shoulders and look at her. “What do we do now?”

Idiot! I’d just determined it was my responsibility to maintain boundaries, then I go and defer to her for decision-making. But to be fair, she’d called the meeting, and she had more information than I did.

Harlow crossed her arms and huffed, her breath misting in the frigid air. “We see what we can find out, then we meet up again and . . .” She shrugged. “Brainstorm or something?”

“Right.” I sighed. “I’ll get some markers. We can do a mind map.”

We stared at each other with blank faces for a beat, then cracked grins at the same time, chuckling through the tension.

“We can’t keep meeting in the park,” I said once the mirth faded. “Aside from the fact that I can’t feel my toes, it’s too risky. Too open.”

“Agreed. Let’s try to think of another solution.”

“OK. So I’ll just wait for your friend to pass me another note?” I raised my brows.

She winced. “Yeah. Sorry. It was the best I could do on short notice. I couldn’t risk using technology. Oh, that reminds me.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out an older-looking smart phone. “My number is in here. Don’t use it to contact anyone else, and don’t, under any circumstances, use it to go on the internet or log into any of your accounts.”

“Got it.” I tucked it into my pocket.

“OK.” She looked around and shuffled her feet. “Until the next clandestine meeting, Mr. Monroe.”

I cringed on the inside but managed to keep my face neutral.
